How many times have you said that you dont have anything to wear but at the same time didnt have space for anything new! LOL we all have at one point. I'm positive that I keep clothing way longer than I should! I have a huge love-hate relationship when I shop. For the most part when I am shopping I either get overwhelmed with the store itself or I don't find anything that really interest me. But what if you could just revamp old clothing and make it new? You don't have to be a fashion designer to add creativity to your closet!
Ahhh this is my very first of many DIY's and we are creating Fray Jeans! If you are not familiar with this new trend check out the images below. I'm very hands on I pretty much get the job done with what I have but I listed the only things I used to create this look. You can choose to add any additional tools that you need to make the process easy for you.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
a pair of jeans
scissors
STEP 1: CHOOSE YOUR STYLE OF JEANS
Of course your first step to your new pair of jeans is to choose the style of jean that you wish to fray. I will be using a pair of old dark denim Levi's since they can use a little spicing up. The first thing you want to decide is the length you desire to wear. If you wish to have a certain style, measure and mark the length you need. Once you have determine your length, you will cut at the areas where marked.
I will be keeping length as is so here I am cutting the bottom hem off only. By cutting straight across I will have a leveled fraying style. Before you cut your jeans, consider if you want a certain direction. However you decide to cut the jeans is how the design will fall.
STEP 2: REMOVE THREADS FROM SEAM
Once you have cut your length, you will begin to unthread the seams. I used scissors to unthread the seams, however you can use a variety of things. Before you began unthreading you will need to make another mark to indicate how thick you want the fray. If you would like just the ends done then you would not unthread as much. Here I wanted a pretty good amount so I unthreaded a great portion.
STEP 3: THE FRAY PROCESS
You will notice that the fabric will start coming apart and this is exactly what you want! As you will notice in the 3rd photo, the lighter fabric is what you want to put out of the jean to get your fray look. Pay attention to how your jeans are stitched as it may be different from these photos. The second photo is the material that you need in order to start seeing your fray style come to life.
(Pull the lighter thread out of the jean here)
STEP 4: YOU WILL BEGIN TO SEE PROGRESS
The more of the lighter threading you that you remove the closer you will get to seeing a change. Continue to pull thread apart.
Here I have completed one side. Repeat the process on the opposite side. Wash your jeans like normal & welcome your newly designed jeans.
Get creative with your jeans by bleaching your fray or adding color! You can also add embellishment around the beginning of your design to make it fun! :)
